Successful Liver Transplant In Manila

A group of all Filipino doctors have successfully performed a pediatric liver transplant in Monday held in The Medical City hospital in Manila. This may seems odd but yes, this is the first time a Filipino doctor has done it.

Erica Buenaventura, the three year old girl who suffered from a deadly liver disease with complications, was the first pediatric patient who fortunately benefited from the joined efforts of PCSO (Philippine Charity Sweepstakes) and The Medical City's recently established Center for Liver Disease Management and Transplantation.

Erica was referred to The Medical City by liver transplant surgeon Dr. Vanessa De Villa. According to reports, the child suffered from several complications which include pediatric hypertension that is due to the disorder of group of veins within the stomach, intestine, spleen and pancreas. Malnutrition and vein bleeding around the esophagus are some of the additional health problems for the child.

Erica's uncle, Jefimage of a liverferson Llantino is kind enough to donate a portion of his liver to his ill niece. For those who are not familiar with the characteristics of the liver, our liver is the only organ in the human body that has the capability to regenerate itself. So practically, Jefferson's liver will be normal again in months time.

The operation was held in January 7 with two major operations that ended in the next day. By January 12, Erica began therapy sessions and is now on her way to full recovery. Their main concern right now is to give the child full nutrition to fasten her recovery. Erica weighed only 10 kilograms.

Dr. De Villa added that Erica will still undergo lifelong medications and liver therapy that includes immuno-suppressive drugs to help her new liver adapt to her body system. This medications will vary as she ages and different regular check ups are mandatory.

This is a major medical breakthrough in Philippine's liver transplant treatment with no foreign physicians involved. As a Filipino myself, I hope that positive medical case like this will be duplicated not only to liver transplant cases but also to other types of diseases.

Liver disease has many types of disorder which includes hepatitis, alcohol causing liver disorders and fatty liver which I fortunately suffering from. Although liver transplants have been performed before, there are only a handful of survivors and none in children.

I am so delighted with this kind of news and hopefully many will follow.
